The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, recently issued a strong warning to rice milling businesses involved in manipulative pricing practices that harm farmers and the public. He emphasized the government’s commitment to taking over such operations and transferring them to Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives, in line with Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution. This article mandates the state’s control over sectors vital to the country and the people’s welfare, including rice milling. During the launch of the Merah Putih Village Cooperative in Bentangan Village, Klaten, President Prabowo highlighted the importance of ensuring that rice millers comply with national interests. Reports of some millers earning significant profits during the harvest season led the government to intervene to stabilize farmers’ terms of trade. However, a new concern has arisen regarding the sale of fake “premium” rice blends, prompting President Prabowo to order an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police. He expressed disappointment over the annual losses of IDR 100 trillion due to fraudulent practices by a few business groups, labeling these actions as betrayals of the nation. President Prabowo asserted the need for firm legal action to address such offenses, emphasizing his commitment to upholding the Constitution and enforcing the law.
