President Prabowo Subianto strongly criticized corrupt practices in the rice trade industry in Indonesia, promising to take action against companies that manipulate and increase the price of subsidized rice. During the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB), the President highlighted that these actions cost the country up to Rp100 trillion annually. He pointed out that despite the various subsidies provided by the government for rice production, some companies repackage the rice and sell it as “premium” rice at a higher price, leading to significant financial losses for the nation. Prabowo disclosed that 212 rice milling companies have been identified for engaging in such deceptive practices and emphasized the need for them to return the illegitimate profits. He denounced the behavior as criminal and emphasized that it directly contradicts the constitution. The President expressed his determination to address the issue, instructing the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to take swift measures against those responsible. He reiterated that his actions are guided by the constitutional obligation to safeguard vital sectors of the economy that impact the people’s well-being. The funds lost due to these corrupt practices could have been used to enhance public services, illustrating the detrimental impact of such activities on the nation’s development.
